A Torture Victim Speaks

Amir, Iranian Torture Victim

Amir is a 22-year-old gay Iranian who was arrested by Iran’s morality police as part of a massive Internet entrapment campaign targeting gays. He was beaten and tortured while in custody, threatened with death, and lashed 100 times. He escaped from Iran in August, and is now in Turkey, where he awaits the granting of asylum by a gay-friendly country.

In a two hour telephone interview from Turkey, Amir — through a translator — provided a terrifying, first-hand account of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s intense and extensive anti-gay crackdown, which swept up Amir and made him its victim. Here is Amir’s story …

New information about the pending executions in Iran

Finally, Doug Ireland has gathered some further information about the two Iranian men who are scheduled to be hanged on August 27 or 28: (mehr…)

New executions scheduled, Iranian exiles say

According to still unconfirmed information another two Iranian men are scheduled to be executed for gay sex in the Islamic republic. Even the day is said to be already fixed: it’s August 28. Doug Ireland, one of the first to report about the case, cites a leftwing exile organisation as his source:

In the last 24 hours I‘ve been in touch with Farhad Hoseini of the International Federation of Iranian Refugees (IFIR), who reports that two gay men — Farbod Mostaar and Ahmad Chooka — have been tried and sentenced to be executed for homosexuality on August 28, in the Iranian city of Arak. […] He told me that he and the IFIR had received the information about these scheduled new gay executions from members of the families of the two men whose death at the hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been programmed. Hoseini asserted that the men were to be killed for consensual homosexual acts with each other — such acts are punishable by death in the Islamic Republic.

Ireland is still trying to gather further details. Meanwhile, he hints at an alleged atmosphere of growing anxiety and repression in Iran:

As I noted in my latest article for New York City’s Gay City News on the hangings of the two gay Iranian teens in the city of Mashad on July 19, the climate of repression and surveillance of gays in Iran in the wake of those hangings has increased tremendously since the news of these barbaric executions went global and elicited world-wide protests. Hoseini confirmed that the IFIR’s contacts inside Iran also are reporting this crackdown — and he said everyone is afraid to talk about State anti-gay repression, including the families of the two men […]

Deeply divided

The Guardian runs a nice reportage on the complex shape of Iranian society today:

Iran, with its unabashed nuclear ambitions, is top of the US’s next-to-invade list. Is the mood in the country fearful or defiant? James Meek sounds out hardline clerics, Tehran liberals, mosque-goers, workers and the near-destitute — and finds surprising resonances with their superpower enemy

Doubly marginalized

In January 2002, Niloufar (30) was asked to answer some questions about her life as an Iranian immigrant in the U.S. — Here’s an excerpt:

How have the September 11 attacks and their aftermath affected you personally?

The September attack was a horrendous tragedy and came as a great shock. Still, I never predicted the events that would follow. I was appalled by the anti-Middle Eastern/Muslim/Arab atmosphere, and Middle-Eastern bashing and stereotyping in the aftermath of the attack. Ironically, it reminded me of the queer-bashing I have witnessed and experienced my entire life. I guess the question I have been asking myself as an „Iranian Lesbian“ — and doubly marginalized — is if there will ever be a place I could call home. And if I will ever belong anywhere.

Making fun of the Ayatollah’s teachings on sex

Ach Gott! Hanged for rape of a minor? But are you sure that Mr. Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic revolution in Iran, has judged this to be a crime at all?

A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate. If he penetrates and the child is harmed then he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life. This girl, however would not count as one of his four permanent wives. The man will not be eligible to marry the girl’s sister.

Sex with an animal? Why not! Yet don‘t eat it afterwards unless it was already dead:

The meat of horses, mules, or donkeys is not recommended. It is strictly forbidden if the animal was sodomized while alive by a man. In that case, the animal must be taken outside the city and sold.

Boah, fucking dead animals. And you thought Islamic fundamentalists had a fundamental problem with alternative sexualities! But that’s because you confuse them with their Christian counterpart. For the Islamic version of religious foolery it’s rather a matter of which animals you are going to penetrate:

If one commits an act of sodomy with a cow, a ewe, or a camel, their urine and their excrements become impure, and even their milk may no longer be consumed. The animal must then be killed as quickly as possible and burned, and the price of it paid to its owner by him who sodomized it.

But whatever species, if you have cum, you are supposed to wash before prayer:

If a man (God protect him from it!) fornicates with an animal and ejaculates, ablution is necessary.

Allah has forbidden anal sex between males, right? Okay, it doesn‘t matter anyway, for in real life you have to be somewhat more pragmatic:

If a man sodomizes the son, brother, or father of his wife after their marriage, the marriage remains valid.

Yeah, religion can be joy. And, of course, this is true for Christian fundamentalism, too! :-D

Germany, sweet land of the judges and hangmen

Everybody has condemned the execution of two teenagers in Iran. Everybody? No, there’s one exception: Europe’s biggest newspaper, the German tabloid „BILD“. On July 27 it featured the following story:

Iran execution in BILD

Translation:

Here two child defilers are hanged

Tehran — Their eyes are bandaged, the wrapped-up hangmen put the ropes around their necks: A few seconds later those two child defilers are dead. The young men were sentenced to death before an Iranian court, because they allegedly kidnapped and raped a 13-year-old boy.

BILD is known for its bias to distort facts and smear people. BILDblog.de, which is exclusively dedicated to expose all the lies of BILD, runs a story about the BILD coverage of this incident. As far as facts are concerned: the two teenagers have never been accused of kidnapping. But of course, the real scandal is BILD’s thinly veiled sympathy for the court’s decision to hang two „child defilers“.

Meanwhile, the gay online magazine queer.de has bestowed its infamous „homo gherkin“ award on BILD for leaving behind all standards of accurateness and cheering the execution of two minors.
